A canopy or shelter is a structure that provides protection against the extremes of both cold and hot weather, as well as from wind, rain or snow.
The first shelters made by man were made from animal hides, stones, straw, vines, or wood. The different types of canopies people erect mainly depend on the climate and the materials available.
Although cape reed thatch has been available for hundreds of years in South Africa, its use in the UK is very new. Our range of thatched canopies are all heavy duty commercial grade products, designed to create a unique solution for the typical UK climate. How many times have you organised a barbeque for friends and family and at the crucial moment, the heavens open and everyone has to rush indoors – not any more! Predictions in global weather patterns indicate that the UK will become a more tropical in the long term – this means warmer and wetter weather – we are already witnessing heavy downpours one minute and sunshine the next.

Our canopy kits offer the opportunity to spend as much time outdoors as possible! Each stunning thatched canopy provides an covered outside area that is both attractive and functional. Once erected these unique thatched canopies can be left up permanently and will provide a robust shelter against all the elements. Highly durable, the canopy frames and cape reed thatch tiles have been designed to withstand conditions including: strong winds, driving rain and snow. The canopies never need be taken down, and require no maintenance.
DIY Self Assembly Kits:
All the African thatch canopies are supplied on a DIY self assembly basis. Each self assembly kit is supplied with easy to follow user instructions. No specialist tools or experience is required. A telephone hotline, manned by an experienced fitter, is available for those who should require any assistance.
Each canopy kit consist of the relevant roof frame and all the necessary thatch tiles to fully thatch the chosen roof size. In addition the kit is supplied with either rustic pine or Douglas Fir Rewood timber poles. Depending on the size chosen the canopy kits are supplied with the option of 4, 6 or 8 (125mm or 150mm) tanalith E treated rustic pine or Douglas Fir Redwood timber poles. Specifically in house engineered heavy duty pole brackets are also supplied to enable secure fixing of the roof frame to the poles. The supporting canopy poles can either be concreted into the ground to hold the structure securely or alternatively they can be fixed to a concrete base, patio or decking area using our 125mm or 150mm pole anchors. The canopy kits are ideal for those wishing to construct a thatched canopy over an existing or new concrete base, patio or decking area. You can add your own unique options to this structure once erected.
Extensive Model Range & Options:
The African Thatch Company currently offer seven different thatched canopy kits: four circular and three oval roof sizes. Once you have chosen a suitable roof size depending upon the space available and your individual requirements you can than select the number and type of poles required. The 4 pole canopy or shelter kits afford more space between each pole and are specifically designed to accommodate the ever popular garden hot tub and swim spas. The 6 and 8 pole canopy kits are designed more for entertainment purposes and general outdoor usage.
